Feeding the world. The U.S. produces 20 percent of the world’s beef with 7 percent of the world’s cattle. Today, there are half as many farmers and ranchers feeding a population that has more than doubled. Thanks to modern production practices, each U.S. farmer today produces food and fiber annually to feed 155 people in the United States and abroad, compared to 19 people in 1940.
